Meta Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan has explained the temporary disappearance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Facebook video. He explained that the incident was not intentional and that the video was temporarily unavailable due to a technical error. He apologized to the Indian government for this.
A Meta delegation led by Joel Kaplan met with the Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) S. Krishnan in New Delhi on Wednesday. Issues such as the removal of Prime Minister Modi’s post, the control of child sexual abuse content (CSAM), and measures to curb misinformation generated by artificial intelligence were discussed.
Meta explained that the Prime Minister Modi video was temporarily unavailable due to an error in its AI-based automated content filters. It later acknowledged the error and restored the post. The company said it would ensure that such incidents do not happen again and that it was implementing additional security checks for celebrity accounts (Facebook Error Meta Apology).
The central government has made it clear that Meta’s explanation is inadequate and that stricter monitoring is needed before removing posts by public representatives. It has advised Meta to strengthen its content moderation system in line with Indian laws.
